Puerto Vallarta is not just a quaint little coastal town, nor is Riviera Nayarit just the best-kept secret on the Mexican Pacific coast. The beauty of the coast, its exotic vegetation and especially its clean beaches take your breath away. The idea of keeping our beaches clean has become our mission. We are the only region that has been able to get 5 beaches certified by the Mexican Institute of Regulations and Verification (Instituto Mexicano de Normatización y Verificación – IMNV)!
After months of intensive efforts, the northern and southern Nuevo Vallarta beaches and part of the Bucerias beach in the Riviera Nayarit region, and the Garza Blanca and Camarones beaches in the Puerto Vallarta region, have earned this award. This means much more than just keeping garbage off the sand, the Institute checks water quality as well, ensuring that it’s free of any contaminants to make it safe for swimming, playing and even scuba diving nearby.
Earning this prize was no mean feat. Joint efforts had to be carried out to comply with very high standards and strict guidelines to obtain the level of cleanliness required. What to the common eye may look like a pristine beach could be a disaster to the expert eye. They look at water quality, the amount of foreign particulates on the sand, respect shown for animal and plant diversity, the absence of floating or visible solid residue in the ocean, the surrounding infrastructure, ease of access for handicapped people, environmental protection programs, public security and an infinite number of factors that are taken into account to ensure that the beach is not only free from garbage or contamination, but also safe in all aspects. For example, Erick is a recurring visitor. Last April, during Holy Week, he was visiting Nuevo Vallarta. While smoking a cigarette, he was asked if he thought the sand he was standing on was clean. He answered: “yes”, but Erick didn’t know that the beach he was on was undergoing certification.

Since then, he has learned that among many other requirements, the sand cannot contain more than five solid particle residues of any size on an extension of 100 linear meters of beach. Erick had become conscious of an important fact. Doing a quick calculation, in the last two minutes, his own family had thrown out a cigarette butt and a small wrapper. Those were two particles already! They may have been small, but they were there. He started understanding that if his wife smoked a pack a day, at least a third of her cigarette butts ended up on the beach, so just that activity had stopped that beach from getting certified. He changed his outlook one hundred percent. Nowadays, if he’s asked the same question, he’d say: “define clean; to know if it’s clean or not, I need to understand your concept of clean”. Four months later, the certification had been obtained thanks to the joint efforts of private enterprise and state and county governments. When Erick came back last November, he no longer smoked on the beach.

“It’s incredible. The beach had looked clean before, but now it looks like it’s gone through a Laundromat. The view is astounding. It used to be impressive, now it’s mind-blowing. Now I can be sure my kids won’t get sick by swimming in the sea”, he said.
Still, the Banderas Bay community can’t let down their guard. They’re maintaining very strict programs to ensure that their certifications are kept up and are working on four more beaches. They know you can’t isolate one beach from the others, so they’re working to keep up the standards so that every point on the coast is impeccable.

Chairs continue to seduce designers and architects. Plastic, steel and leather are some of the more common materials used. The trend is towards one-piece items where the seat and back are together. Clean lines are still current.
If chairs were simply “seats with a back, usually with four legs in which only one person can sit”, as defined by the Spanish Royal Academy Dictionary, then they wouldn’t be considered as important as they are. They’re much more than that. They are one of the most important pieces of furniture in the home, not only because of their practicality, but their role as style-setting pieces in home décor. In spite of their importance, there had really been no major differences in chairs until some twenty years ago. Most models were of a classic cut, either with covered seats or seats made in lacquered wood. Variants were only seen in the quality of the product, be it the type of wood or the fabric used.
Nowadays however, all you have to do is walk through some of the stores dedicated to this business to realize that chairs exist in an infinite variety. The reason behind this is simple: designers have placed their eyes on these pieces and turned them into their favorite child. Now they use an incredible array of materials in their fabrication; materials that would have been unthinkable in the past. Figures and shapes are incredibly varied and all colors are used.
Within this incredible range one can distinguish three design trends. One of these leans toward pop. They use materials like steel and acrylic and work with ergonomic designs. Of course, traditional models still abound, those that prefer wood and leather as their working materials. Lastly, there are those “author versions, made by well-known architects and designers, that become almost collection items due to the hand-made nature of the work”.
In the face of such variety, all that’s left is to take into account certain aspects while choosing the best model. To begin with, the purpose of the chair is essential. A chair to be used for the computer is very different than one for the garden or living room. In the first case, alternatives center on those that have a back and can be regulated. Those that present permanent contact are best if one is to spend many hours in front of a monitor. For smaller areas, folding or piling chairs are the best choice.

¡FOR SALE! DIEGO RIVERA STUDIO IN ACAPULCO Rivera murals add value to Mexican property.
A mansion on the market in Mexico’s legendary beach resort of Acapulco has an unusual selling point — five murals by one of the country’s most renowned artists, Diego Rivera.
Three of the murals are publicly unseen, late works by the world famous Mexican artist who died more than 50 years ago made and his name painting massive murals on buildings from Mexico City to New York.
The mansion was built on a cliff in Acapulco’s heydey in the middle of the last century, and is on the market for a minimum of six million dollars.
Olmedo, a sophisticated art collecter and friend of Rivera and his famous artist wife Frida Kahlo, had the mansion built in 1940.
“The House of the Winds”, was her family vacation retreat from 1951 until her death. Diego Rivera was Lola Olmedo’s friend for life and houseguest for two years upon returning from Russia in 1955. Rivera created the murals ( between 1955 and 1957 — the year he died.) out of his love, respect and admiration for his muse and trusted friend. Diego Rivera also painted 24 sunset scenes from “The House of the Winds” and sketched the children of Dolores Olmedo.
Dolores was a great admirer of the man and his work; she became the largest Rivera’s and Kahlo’s art collector worldwide. These precious pieces of art are now displayed in her museum, “Museo Dolores Olmedo Patiño”, in Mexico City which she donated to the people of Mexico valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars, being part of the trilogy world famous museums along with The Frida Kahlo’s “Blue House” and the Diego Rivera’s “Anahuacalli”.
Olmedo died in 2002 and passed the property, which includes a tropical garden and a swimming pool overlooking the Pacific, to her grandchildren who now live in the United States and wish to sell it.
Rivera’s work cannot leave the country because it is considered to be part of Mexico’s cultural heritage, but private individuals can buy the property.
For now, Rivera fans remain in suspense over the unseen works.
The property is not open to the public so that interested parties can decide what to do with it
The Estate and Murals can be seen at www.houseofthewinds.com

There’s no task that strikes more fear in the heart of a decorator than choosing the right paint color. And even trickier — choosing the right white.

1.) Choose a white according to your furniture style. Very bright pure whites (like Benjamin Moore’s Super White) tend to work best in minimal interiors with very modern furniture. Traditional furniture incorporating dark antique woods often looks out of place in bright white interiors but looks harmonious when pared with creamier whites (Linen White) with a hint of yellow, gold or taupe.
2.) Avoid white in rooms that are basic boxes. White looks fantastic in rooms with high ceilings, mouldings and large windows, but can seem very bland in new construction with no architectural details. If you use white in these circumstances, consider an accent wall of color or use colorful art to lend the room more interest.
3.) Choose a white with the color of your furniture in mind. White walls will reflect colorful furniture. A red couch will turn walls pinkish. A green couch will lend the walls a greenish cast. Choose a white keeping in mind how it will look when reflecting large colorful pieces. For example, if you’ve got a green couch, you might use a pinkish white to offset the color cast.
4.) Keep in mind where the light comes from. Where the windows face in a room can have a profound effect on the tone a white takes. Northfacing windows can make a white room appear grayish. Eastfacing light can lend a room a pink or lilac cast. Westfacing rooms may have an orange-gold cast, and southfacing rooms receive intense sunlight that can drain out color. Keep these color tones in mind by choosing a white that will help balance out color reflected by natural light. For example, you might use a white with a pink or yellow undertone for a northfacing room. You might choose a white with blue or green undertones for an eastfacing or southfacing room. If a room receives primarily artificial incandescent light, choose a warmer white, as a cool white with hints of blue can seem drab.
5.) Don’t paint high-traffic areas white. If you do choose white for areas that get a lot of use, be sure to choose a washable paint that can be wiped down often.
6.) Choose a warmer white to keep rooms from feeling sterile. Cool whites are much harder to pull off, and never feel cozy.
7.) Invest in a color wheel of white. Because there are so many shades of white, it makes sense to see the whole spectrum at once. Study the wheel, choose three or four to sample, and compare them by painting patches of your wall.
8.) Check out the favorites. Every designer seems to have a favorite white. These are some oft-cited favorites from Benjamin Moore: Decorator’s white, White Dove, Moonlight Night, Super White, Linen White, Cloud White, China White.

There are actually hundreds of shades of white, each with a very specific feeling. There’s Alpine White and Easter Lily. There’s Decorator’s White and China White. The list goes on and on. Some whites have hints of green or blue. Others hints of gray, red or yellow. Some whites feel traditional, others feel hard-edged and modern. So how to choose?

The ghost of a fingerprint in the top left corner of an obscure portrait appears to have confirmed one of the most extraordinary art discoveries.
The 33 x 23cm (13 x 9in) picture, in chalk, pen and ink, appeared at auction at Christie’s, New York, in 1998, catalogued as “German school, early 19th century”. It sold for $19,000 . Now a growing number of leading art experts agree that it is almost certainly by Leonardo da Vinci and worth about $150,000,000.

Carbon dating and infra-red analysis of the artist’s technique are consistent with such a conclusion, but the most compelling evidence is that fragment of a fingerprint.

Peter Paul Biro, a Montreal-based forensic art expert, found it while examining images captured by the revolutionary multispectral camera from the Lumière Technology company, Antiques Trade Gazette reports today.

Mr Biro has pioneered the use of fingerprint technology to help to resolve art authentication disputes. Multispectral analysis reveals each layer of colour, and enables the pigment mixtures of each pixel to be identified without taking physical samples. The fingerprint corresponds to the tip of the index or middle finger, and is “highly comparable” to one on Leonardo’s St Jerome in the Vatican. Importantly, St Jerome is an early work from a time when Leonardo was not known to have employed assistants, making it likely that it is his fingerprint.

Martin Kemp, Emeritus Professor of History of Art at the University of Oxford, is convinced and recently completed a book about the find (as yet unpublished). He said that his first reaction was that “it sounded too good to be true — after 40 years in the business, I thought I’d seen it all”. But gradually, “all the bits fell into place.”

Professor Kemp has rechristened the picture, sold as Young Girl in Profile in Renaissance Dress, as La Bella Principessa after identifying her, “by a process of elimination”, as Bianca Sforza, daughter of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan (1452-1508), and his mistress Bernardina de Corradis. He described the profile as “subtle to an inexpressible degree”, as befits the artist best known for the Mona Lisa.

If it is by Leonardo, it would be the only known work by the artist on vellum although Professor Kemp points out that Leonardo asked the French court painter Jean Perréal about the technique of using coloured chalks on vellum in 1494.

The picture was bought in 1998 by Kate Ganz, a New York dealer, who sold it for about the same sum to the Canadian-born Europe-based connoisseur Peter Silverman in 2007. Ms Ganz had suggested that the portrait “may have been made by a German artist studying in Italy … based on paintings by Leonardo da Vinci”.

When Mr Silverman first saw it, in a drawer, “my heart started to beat a million times a minute,” he said. “I immediately thought this could be a Florentine artist. The idea of Leonardo came to me in a flash.”

Carbon-14 analysis of the vellum gave a date range of 1440-1650. Infra-red analysis revealed stylistic parallels to Leonardo’s other works, including a palm print in the chalk on the sitter’s neck “consistent … to Leonardo’s use of his hands in creating texture and shading”, according to Mr Biro.
